Tea Ceremony Whisking Experience

with Jennifer Swanson

Learn and experience Japanese tea ceremony. The workshop will include a brief history of tea ceremony, a demonstration, as well as lesson on the culture and traditions associated with tea. You will also learn how to whisk your own bowl and how to “be a guest” at a tea ceremony. 

Jennifer Swanson is a professional English and Japanese teacher, serving the DC area since 1999.  Jennifer studied Japanese at UC San Diego, earned her graduate level multi-subject teaching credential, and participated in the JET program as an ALT in Kanagawa-ken (93-95).  She then worked at a Tokyo based expatriate services company and passed JLPT N1 in 1998.  She runs her own teaching/cultural consulting business. (jenniferswanson.org) She started studying Japanese OMOTESENKE tea ceremony in 2013 enjoys sharing Japanese tea ceremony in person and online.

Experience the beauty and tradition of Japanese calligraphy (書, shodō) in this hands-on workshop led by renowned artist Kihachiro Nishiura. Begin with a lecture exploring the history and artistry of shodō, followed by a live demonstration where Nishiura-sensei will bring characters to life with each brushstroke. As a special highlight, he will take participant requests and create custom kanji pieces, blending skill and spontaneity in an unforgettable display. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a master at work and deepen your appreciation for this timeless art form!

Kihachiro Nishiura is a descendant of Nishiura Enji, the founder of the Nishiura-yaki school of ceramics, which was highly acclaimed in the Meiji Era. His “Nishiura Style” exhibitions of incense, floral arrangements, calligraphy, and other art forms have been enthusiastically received in Japan and around the world. 

Competitive Karuta–The ultimate mind sport from Japan

Competitive karuta is the ultimate mind sport, testing players’ memorization skills and quick reactions to the reciter’s voice. The game gained worldwide popularity after the anime Chihayafuru was distributed internationally. Today, there are more than 20 karuta clubs worldwide, including four in the U.S. 

We will introduce a mini-game version of this authentic Japanese mind sport. 

Mutsumi Stone is a competitive (kyōgi) karuta player with a 6th dan ranking. After playing competitive karuta in Japan for nine years, she moved to the U.S. and later lived in England, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and China, allowing her to promote kyōgi karuta in those and neighboring countries. After returning to the U.S. in 2013, she has been organizing competitive karuta practice sessions and introducing this mind sport in Japanese classes at schools and colleges. As the overseas liaison for the All Japan Karuta Association, she supports karuta players worldwide. 

Kendama – Beginner to Black Belt

Join Matt Hall, a seasoned kendama practitioner and founding member of the British Kendama Association, for a workshop focused on practicing the Japan Kendama Association’s black belt tricks. Starting with the 10 fundamental techniques, you’ll progress through the skills required to achieve advanced proficiency in this traditional Japanese art.

Matt Hall began practicing kendama in 2000, when he was given his first kendama by the legendary Masahiro Mizuno, after acting as his interpreter. Since then he has achieved his 1st rank in Kendama, and is one of the founding members of the British Kendama Association.

Packing a bento box is a great way to enjoy a healthy, economical, and eco-friendly meal. In this workshop, I’ll share easy and fun ideas for creating beautiful, delicious, and wholesome bento. This year, I’ll also teach you how to wrap your bento using a handkerchief, furoshiki, or tenugui for a stylish and practical finish. 

Harmonious Kitchen is proud to once again provide shōkadō bentō (traditional Japanese lunch boxes) to the three Japanese players from the LA Dodgers during the team’s away games, April 7–9, 2025. We’re honored to support these top athletes with nutritious, performance-boosting meals—just as we did after last year’s Japan Bowl. Want to taste what the players are eating? Japanese Yukata Trial Workshop

This is a workshop where you can try on a yukata (a summer cotton kimono) yourself under the guidance of instructor Hideko Uchiyama.

Hideko Uchiyama, Professor of Kyoto Hakubi Kimono academy, has been in charge of kimono fashion shows and kimono lectures for the Sakura Princess Program.  

She has held kimono dressing classes in the United States, including  at the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, the presenter of the National Japan Bowl. 

Japanese Logic Puzzle Adventure: A Workshop with Nikoli

Join Yoshi Anpuku, the puzzle master behind Shikaku, and learn how to play this popular puzzle that adds a twist to numerical logic challenges with its area-based concept. Your goal is to divide the grid into rectangular regions so that each region contains only one number, which represents the area of that region. Yoshi sensei will also teach you Japanese word puzzles.  

Nikoli, a Tokyo-based publisher founded in 1980, is renowned for inventing over 300 types of logic puzzles. It introduced Japan’s inaugural puzzle magazine and is distinguished for their handcrafted puzzles. Nikoli is credited with naming Sudoku and igniting its worldwide popularity. Today, Nikoli publishes more than 150 puzzle magazines and books, distributing puzzle content to over 100 newspapers and magazines globally.
